Best Affordable Hearing Aids: Compare What You Really Pay

By Hearing Aids Index · Last checked October 26, 2026

The best affordable hearing aids start with a suitable device you can manage and a return loss you can afford. Audien Atom One is $98 per pair without its care bundle; MDHearing NEO XS is $297 with published setup support. Neither price establishes which will help your hearing. Compare the conditions before choosing.

The useful question is not simply “What is cheapest?” It is “What can I buy, use and return without breaking my budget?” A small price difference can disappear into a care-plan renewal, a shipping deduction or a replacement that the warranty excludes.

Scope: U.S. purchases, with published prices checked October 26, 2026. Unless stated otherwise, prices are for two hearing aids, before tax, shipping and optional extras. We may earn a commission when you buy through some links on this site. A commission does not set the order or decide which device fits.

Fit Check: a low price does not settle suitability

OTC hearing aids are for adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. They are available without a prescription, but buying the cheapest one is not a substitute for finding out whether OTC is the right category. FDA OTC guidance.

This is buying information, not medical advice. See a doctor for the FDA warning signs, including pain or recent ear drainage, severe dizziness, hearing changes, hearing worse in one ear or ringing only in one ear. If you cannot hear speech in quiet or loud sounds well, get professional help rather than buying a more powerful OTC device. Sudden hearing loss needs immediate medical attention. A device that stays in its case is poor value at any price. Being eligible to consider OTC also does not mean every OTC model will suit your ears.

“Below $100” does not mean an order is guaranteed to arrive for less than $100 after tax. Likewise, we have not confirmed a delivered checkout total, financing approval or current inventory for any row.

If you qualify for OTC, have a $297 device budget and want an in-ear device without an app, NEO XS is worth comparing if you can manage its size. Check the physical controls and obtain your order's exact return-shipping terms first.

See MDHearing NEO XS and confirm the trial terms

If the absolute limit is $100, keep that limit. Read the Audien review and inspect the aids-only option rather than stretching to a product you cannot afford on the assumption it must work better.

The lower advertised price may include a renewing plan

A care bundle and a product-only purchase can have different first-year costs. Choose the plan deliberately; do not compare the introductory bundle price with another brand's device-only price as if they were the same purchase.

Audien's Atom One page currently shows $98 for hearing aids only, or $88 for a bundle with the first month of AudienCare free and then $9 per month. The lower bundle price is conditional on that offer. Maker published terms, October 26, 2026. Atom One purchase options.

Here is the first-year math if you keep the plan and incur 11 paid monthly renewals after the free month:

Atom One purchase scenarioStated assumptionsCalculated cost before tax and shipping
Hearing aids only$98 purchase; no optional plan added$98
$88 bundle, plan kept through 11 paid renewals$88 + 11 × $9; renewal price unchanged$187
Difference between these scenarios$187 − $98$89 more for the bundle with those care-plan payments

This is not a claim that you must spend $187. You might want the plan, cancel it, choose another plan or see a different offer later. It shows why a $10 reduction at checkout does not by itself prove a lower total cost. Check the cancellation process and renewal date separately from any device return. AudienCare details.

Oricle also offers optional extended coverage and has a subscription policy for eligible recurring purchases. We have not verified the price of the optional warranty in your checkout, and we are not saying every device order enrolls you in a subscription. Read every selected line item before paying. Oricle warranty · subscription policy.

A financing offer changes payment timing, not the underlying price of the device. Compare the complete repayment total, including any interest, rather than a monthly figure alone.

What does spending $297 or $397 change?

In this shortlist, those prices buy a different combination of design, documented support and policy terms. They do not prove superior speech understanding or comfort.

MDHearing's current model comparison lists a licensed-specialist telehealth setup appointment with each purchase. NEO XS and VOLT 4 both offer manual controls and four listening settings. NEO XS sits in the ear; VOLT 4 sits behind the ear. Maker published terms, October 26, 2026. MDHearing comparison.

For battery planning, the maker lists approximately 18 hours per charge for NEO XS and 20 hours for VOLT 4. Those are claims, not our measurements. The quoted “100+ hours with case” and “80+ hours with case” are combined charging-case figures, not continuous wear from one charge. See the rechargeable comparison for that distinction.

The choice between these two should begin with handling and placement:

  • NEO XS: consider it if you want an in-ear device and can manage small controls and cleaning.
  • VOLT 4: consider it if you prefer a behind-ear form and want manual operation. Check how it fits around glasses and your ear rather than assuming the shape will suit you.
  • Neither: choose a different route if you need a full ear examination, individualized fitting that these presets do not provide, or in-person help you cannot replace with telehealth.

If you qualify for OTC, can spend $397 and prefer a behind-ear device without an app, compare VOLT 4. The extra $100 over NEO XS buys a different configuration; we have no evidence it buys every reader a better result.

The Fine Print Sheet: compare what happens after checkout

The most affordable choice can change when you account for returns and uncovered problems. Read the row for the model you are considering before treating its trial as free or its warranty as protection against any failure.

For Jabra, the terms also require initiating the return by midnight Eastern on the last day and receipt within 14 days after the return period. While the purchase/delivery conflict remains, ask for written confirmation and plan around the earlier date. For Audien, do not schedule return shipment on day 45 when another passage requires receipt by then.

These are not complaint-rate comparisons. The Oricle, Audien and MDHearing reviews cover the brand-specific evidence and limits in greater detail. A raw complaint count without a sales denominator cannot tell you which device is more reliable.

Cost to Try: what could you lose on a return?

Cost to Try is the nonrefunded money after an eligible, accepted return. It can include return postage, original shipping, fees and purchases outside the device refund. The pair price is cash at risk until the return is accepted, not automatically the amount you lose.

These are illustrative direct-U.S.-purchase calculations, not merchant quotes or guaranteed refunds. Assume an eligible, timely return with all required items, no paid plan or accessories, and no original shipping charge. Tax treatment is not modeled. The $10 postage input is invented for the example and must be replaced with the actual amount.

ExampleRefund-loss mathWhat remains unknown or conditional
$98 Atom One aids-only; actual return postage assumed $10$10 postage, assuming no other deductionPolicy does not specify a restocking charge or quote return postage; confirm any other deductions. Consultation, authorization and condition rules still apply
$199.99 Oricle Pro; return postage assumed $10$4.95 fee + $10 postage = $14.95Add any actual nonrefunded original shipping or extras; formal condition requirements still apply
$297 NEO XS; free prepaid return honored$0, if no other nonrefundable amount appliesThe product-page offer must apply to your order
Same NEO XS order; $20 return kit required instead$20, plus any actual nonrefundable extras or original shippingSelf-paid insured shipping could cost a different amount; confirm which option applies
$1,195 Jabra M1; complete eligible first U.S. return using authorized label$0 for the eligible device order under the cited termsYou still need $1,195 upfront; missing items, final-sale supplies and ineligible returns change the result

A $98 purchase can be the right financial choice when that is the money you have available. A more expensive order with a better eligible-return policy is not affordable if tying up the purchase price would leave you short of essentials.

Build a three-year budget without guessing a device lifespan

A useful budget separates known purchase costs from assumptions about supplies, care plans and repairs. It does not treat an unknown replacement cost as zero or assume that a one-year warranty makes a device last three years.

Use this structure:

Three-year spending = device purchase + chosen care plans + supplies + uncovered repairs or replacements + applicable shipping and tax.

For a simple example, suppose you buy a $297 NEO XS pair and set aside $30 per year for supplies. The $30 is an assumed personal budget, not MDHearing's quoted annual maintenance cost.

Hypothetical three-year scenarioCalculation before tax and shippingResult
Pair plus that assumed supply budget, with no repairs or replacements in the scenario$297 + 3 × $30$387
Same budget, plus one replacement pair bought at an assumed unchanged $297$297 + $90 + $297$684

Neither row predicts lifespan or failure. The point is to show the consequence of an extra purchase you might otherwise leave out. Repair prices, future device prices, supply use and warranty eligibility remain unknown until you have actual figures.

For the Audien bundle, an equally explicit 36-month scenario would be $88 plus 35 paid $9 renewals after one free month: $403, before tax and shipping, assuming the plan and price remain unchanged. That is a chosen service cost, not a mandatory device charge or a three-year warranty promise. Current bundle terms.

Check coverage before deciding you must buy cheaper

Your benefits may change the amount you pay, but a benefit is not useful unless it applies to the exact product, seller and service you plan to use. Confirm those details before ordering on the assumption of reimbursement.

Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids or exams to fit hearing aids. That does not mean it covers no hearing tests: Part B covers qualifying diagnostic hearing and balance exams under its rules. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer hearing benefits; ask your plan for the current conditions. Medicare hearing-aid coverage · diagnostic exam coverage.

Ask an insurer or benefits administrator:

  • Is this exact model covered, and must I buy from a named seller?
  • Is the allowance per ear, per pair or per benefit period?
  • What examination or authorization is needed?
  • Are fitting, follow-up and repairs included separately?
  • What is my total out-of-pocket cost after every condition is met?

If you have a clinic quote, ask for the device and service charges to be identified. Comparing a bare device price with a package of examination, fitting and follow-up can make the difference look simpler than it is. You can seek professional help even when you are considering OTC. FDA buying guidance.

Buy the least expensive route that meets your needs

Stay within a budget you can afford, but make it a complete budget. The lowest price is a starting point; handling, adjustment and the consequences of a failed trial decide whether it is a sensible purchase.

For the strict sub-$100 device budget, inspect the aids-only Atom One option and its limits. For a small in-ear model with a published setup appointment and a $297 budget, examine NEO XS. For a manual behind-ear option at $397, examine VOLT 4. If you want app-created settings and remote adjustments, compare that service explicitly, including the much higher M1 price. If you are considering Oricle, read its policy and specification conflicts before paying.

If your hearing needs or symptoms do not fit OTC, see a hearing professional. A cheaper wrong-category purchase delays the decision you actually need to make.
